Cefalù and the bay seen from the Rocca

A guide by locals

Things to do in Cefalù, from people who grew up here

You can walk around Cefalù in a day, but it deserves more: the sea early in the morning, the old town in the evening, a trip into the mountains when it gets too hot. These are the places we recommend to our guests.

Cefalù Cathedral

The Cathedral was commissioned by the Norman king Roger II, who began building it in 1131. Inside, the apse is dominated by the Byzantine mosaic of Christ Pantocrator. Since 2015 it has been part of the UNESCO site Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale.

Piazza del Duomo is the town's living room: you pass through it several times a day, and in the evening it is the place for a granita or an aperitivo with the façade lit up. Casa del Duomo is a one-minute walk away.

The Rocca and the Temple of Diana

The Rocca is the headland that towers over the town. You climb on foot from the old town along a stepped path; at the top are the remains of the fortifications and the so-called Temple of Diana, a megalithic building. The view over the coast is worth the effort.

In summer, set off early in the morning and bring water and closed shoes: the path is in full sun.

The old town, the wash-house and the old harbour

Corso Ruggero crosses the centre from south to north; the side streets run down to the sea. On Via Vittorio Emanuele is the medieval wash-house, where water from the Cefalino river still flows into the stone basins.

Through Porta Pescara you reach the small beach of the old harbour, with fishing boats and houses rising straight out of the sea. At sunset, the Capo Marchiafava bastion is the best spot to watch the sun go down over the bay.

The Mandralisca Museum

Small and precious, it holds Antonello da Messina's Portrait of an Unknown Sailor, the town's most famous work of art, along with archaeological and shell collections gathered by Baron Enrico Pirajno di Mandralisca in the 19th century.

Beaches

The town beach along the seafront is the most convenient: fine sand, two minutes from Casa del Duomo, with free stretches and beach clubs. In high season it gets very busy.

Salinelle, west of the centre, is the beach of our villas: sandy and quieter, reached directly from the estate. East of town, the Caldura area mixes pebbles and rocks and suits people who like swimming in deep water.

Day trips

Castelbuono, in the Madonie mountains, has a 14th-century Ventimiglia castle and an old town where you eat very well. The Gibilmanna sanctuary, in the hills above Cefalù, is cool and scenic even in midsummer. The Madonie Park has trails for every level.

Palermo is about an hour away by train. For the Aeolian Islands, some agencies run summer boat excursions from Cefalù, while scheduled ferries and hydrofoils leave from Milazzo and, in season, from Palermo: always check times and days before you plan.

Getting to Cefalù

From Palermo Falcone Borsellino airport it takes about an hour and a quarter by car; from Catania airport about two and a half hours. By train, the Palermo–Messina line stops in Cefalù, about an hour from Palermo Centrale.

The old town has a limited traffic zone (ZTL): if you stay at Casa del Duomo, leave your car in a car park outside it. The villas have private parking inside the estate.

Frequently asked questions

Cefalù FAQ

How many days do you need in Cefalù?

Two days are enough for the old town, the Cathedral and the Rocca. With a week you add relaxed beach days and trips to Castelbuono, the Madonie and Palermo.

When is the best time to visit Cefalù?

We would say May, June and September: the sea is already warm, the days are long and it is less crowded than in August.

Do I need a car in Cefalù?

Not in town, where you walk everywhere. A car is handy for inland trips; from our villas you can also reach the centre by train, from Lascari station, under a kilometre away.
